Indore’s Asmi Jain Among Apple’s WWDC23 Swift Student Challenge Winners

As Apple prepares for the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, to be commencing on June 5, Indore’s Asmi Jain is all set to attend it as one of the winners of the Swift Student Challenge, conducted by the tech giant. 

As a 20 years old, Indore-based student of the Medi-Caps University, Jain developed an app to strengthen the eye muscles, while tracking eye movement of a user. Jain said she saw her friend’s uncle suffer from the misalignment of the left eye and facial paralysis because of a brain surgery and wanted to do something about it.

Commenting on the app, Jain said, “My next goal is to get feedback and make sure it’s effective and user-friendly, and then release it on the App Store. Ultimately, I want to expand it so that it helps strengthen all of the muscles in the face, and I hope it can one day serve as a therapy tool that people like my friend’s uncle can use at their own pace.”

She aspires to use coding to solve issues faced by the healthcare sector. She also created a forum at her university where students would come together to work through the tough coding problems. 

Jain furthered, “Coding lets me create things that help my friends and my community. And it gives me a sense of independence that is very empowering.”

Last year, Apple had awarded 350 winners from different countries, which has been increased to 375 this year to include more students to support them to generate more ideas. “We are amazed by the talent we see from the young developers who enter our Swift Student Challenge,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Developer Relations. 

She further added, “Submissions demonstrated not only the next generation’s commitment to building tools that will improve our lives, but also a willingness to embrace new technologies and tools, and deploy them in original and creative ways.”

The winners of the challenge will be able to attend the WWDC23 conference in person and virtually visit the keynote address, the events, the labs and participate in the activities.

The app playgrounds represent more than countries and regions covering healthcare, sports, entertainment, and the environment, as topics. Along with Jain, Yemi Agesin, and Marta Michelle Caliendo will also join the conference as first time winners. 

In a blog post, Apple stated that it is proud to support the next generation of developers, creators, and entrepreneurs through its annual WWDC program.

Apple has not only increased its sales in the country recently but also, according to the government reports, its ecosystem has generated 1 Lakh jobs in India.

Only the Apple stores at Saket, Delhi and BKC, Mumbai employ almost 200 people from different states of the country. 

Following the inauguration of two stores in India, CEO Tim Cook met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about further scope for the tech giant in the country. 

In addition, last year, Apple’s vendor Foxconn was reported to have been planning to quadruple its workforce at its iPhone factory in India over two years.
