Instagram’s Threads app is experiencing significant traction in the country, with Indian users accounting for a third of the app’s total global downloads, according to a recent report by app intelligence firm data.ai.
The report further notes that India led the charts at 33%, followed by Brazil at 22%, the United States at 16%, Mexico at 8%, and Japan with an adoption rate of 5%.
Notably, Instagram’s Threads surpassed the 150 Mn user mark globally within just 10 days of its launch. The report suggested that Threads has already garnered one-fifth of Twitter’s global weekly active user base.
According to the report, the new social media platform’s weekly active user base is said to have surged 86 times last week compared to Truth Social, the largest Twitter rival in the US, which recorded 1 Mn weekly active users as of last week.
On the other hand, app research firm Sensor Tower has reported a decline in Threads’ daily active users globally over the course of last week. The average time spent on the app also decreased 50%, dropping from 20 minutes to 10 minutes last week, according to Sensor Tower.
Threads was officially launched by Meta on July 5 and has emerged as a significant competitor to Twitter. It has even outpaced the adoption rate of pathbreaking AI chatbot ChatGPT, which was launched earlier this year.
While ChatGPT achieved 10 Mn daily users in 40 days and 100 Mn monthly users in less than two months, Threads has achieved these milestones in just two weeks.
Threads’ popularity has largely been attributed to its integration with Instagram, allowing users to move between the two apps quickly. Meanwhile, the launch of Threads has sparked a fresh rivalry between Meta and Twitter to lap up users.
Earlier this month, Twitter threatened to sue Meta over the Threads app, claiming that the latter hired ex-Twitter employees who have access to the microblogging platform’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.
