After stores across Delhi NCR complained of iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max running out of stock, the minister of state (MoS) for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar claims to have spoken to tech giant Apple. The company has claimed to be addressing the issue of iPhone 14 Pro shortage and has ramped up its Indian manufacturing, Chandrashekar has tweeted.
“I have spoken with Apple and they have said while iPhone14 demand is being met also with India production, the iPhone14 Pro demand has surged and is facing supply constraints which they are addressing,” he said in a tweet.
Reports of black market selling of iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have surged and the MoS stated that these private sales are probably ‘alternate’ supply channels.
The Cupertino, US-based tech giant began manufacturing the latest iPhone 14 variants in India within weeks of its global launch. It further claimed to move 5% of the global manufacturing demand to India by the end of 2022.
Consequently, analysts from Moody’s are bullish on Apple’s manufacturing capabilities in the country.
According to a CMR report, in the second quarter of 2022, Apple shipped nearly 1.2 Mn India-manufactured smartphones – growing 94% YoY. The market research firm, too, is bullish about Apple’s India manufacturing capabilities.
Apple’s move to India comes on the back of India launching a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics companies to boost domestic manufacturing in the country. It plans to manufacture iPhones worth INR 47,000 Cr in FY23.
The current iPhone 14 Pro shortage comes on the back of the festive season when electronics (among other categories) went up for massive sales and the recently released iPhone 14 entered the market.
Owing to weaker demand for iPhone 14 Plus, Apple cut down the production of the variant and decided to focus on variants that are quickly running out of stock. However, the remaining made-in-India iPhone 14 variants are likely to enter the market after some time.
