Google India Commits To Mentor 1 Mn Indian Women Entrepreneurs

Tech colossal Google India has committed to mentor 1 Mn Indian women entrepreneurs, said Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State.

Addressing the US-India alliance for Women’s Economic Empowerment, Blinken stated that the US government would help women entrepreneurs to tackle various challenges including lack of training and mentorship.

“We are working to both create and also, as appropriate, replicate efforts like the US-India Alliance for Women’s Economic Empowerment. It connects the private sector and civil society to provide Indian women with technical skills and networking opportunities to help them grow their businesses….We are working with other partners to increase that number. That would have a remarkable impact,” Blinken said.

One of the ways the US government will enable women’s empowerment is through WE-Champs, which will offer technical assistance and training to women in 18 countries in Europe. Besides that, the US will also provide child and elder care support to women thus, helping them participate equally in the global economy.

The development comes a day after various media reports shared Google’s plans of approaching the apex court to block regulatory body CCI’s antitrust verdict on its dominance in India’s Android devices market.  

Google is likely to file a petition against the CCI before January 19th as its deadline for implementing the watchdog’s order.

Talking about Google India’s efforts to empower women, Blinken shared that women’s participation in the business ecosystem is required for an inclusive recovery from the pandemic. 

“As you have heard, we need their leadership in resolving conflict. We need their ideas and their innovation to tackle the climate crisis. The strategy that we’re putting forward has at its heart a simple vision: creating a world in which all women and girls everywhere can contribute to and benefit from economic growth and global prosperity,” he added.

The US will also work towards improving the economic competitiveness of women to bring more of them to participate and lead various sectors as CEOs and board members.

Speaking on the gender gap, he shared that closing the gender gap in the workforce by 2025 will add nearly $28 Tn to the world’s economy.  Women’s contribution to the economy is currently vital as the world is recovering from the aftermath of COVID, climate change and other challenges impacting the economy.
