Google Brings In Gemini Mobile App In India With Support For Nine Local Languages

SUMMARY

Google will roll out Gemini access for iOS users in India directly from the Google app over the next few weeks

The tech giant has also introduced some new features in Gemini Advanced, such as new data analysis capabilities and file uploads

The development comes at a time when the GenAI landscape in India is witnessing rapid rise and adoption, with investors taking a shine on homegrown AI startups

Tech giant Google has rolled out the mobile app of its GenAI chatbot Gemini in India with new capabilities in English and nine Indian languages.

Google’s chief executive officer Sundar Pichai announced the launch on X.

“Exciting news! Today, we’re launching the Gemini mobile app in India, available in English and 9 Indian languages,” Pichai said.

The Android app, which was first announced in February, is underpinned by Google’s latest generative AI model Gemini 1.5 Pro.

“Both the Gemini app and Gemini Advanced, which gives users access to Google’s most capable AI models, will now be available in nine Indian languages, helping more people access information and complete tasks in their preferred language,”  Google said in a blog post.

The app will be available in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, the company said. Google will also integrate these nine local languages into Gemini Advanced.

The Gemini mobile app allows users to type or talk in supported languages and even add an image to get AI assistance.

However, there’s no dedicated Gemini for iOS. Google will roll out Gemini access for iOS users in India directly from the Google app over the next few weeks, the blog post said.

Furthermore, Google announced that it has introduced some new features in Gemini Advanced, such as new data analysis capabilities and file uploads.

The company is also bringing in the ability to chat with Gemini in Google Messages, starting in English.

The development comes amid rapid rise and adoption of GenAI tools. Big players like Microsoft, with Copilot, Google with Gemini and OpenAI with GPT-4o, have made AI chatbot accessible to larger masses.

India’ GenAI market is also witnessing explosive growth and is projected to surpass the $17 Bn mark by 2030, as per Inc42

Spearheading this huge transformation are homegrown AI startups such as Bhavish Aggarwal-led Krutrim and SarvamAI that have raised millions of dollars in funding in recent months.

Krutrim even turned unicorn after raising $50 Mn in a funding round in January.

Recently, Mumbai-based GenAI startup GreyLabs AI raised $1.5 Mn (around INR 12.5 Cr) as part of its seed funding round led by Matrix Partners India.

In April, Bengaluru based Gen AI SaaS startup Vodex raised $2 Mn (around INR 16 Cr) in a seed funding round from Unicorn India Ventures and Pentathlon Ventures.

In November last year, AI-powered martech startup Pixis raised $85 Mn in a Series C1 funding round led by Touring Capital.

As per Inc42 data, India is now home to around 100 GenAI startups who have cumulatively raised more than $600 Mn in funding from investors since 2019.
