Amazon has been witnessing 80% of new customers shopping from Tier-II and III cities during its ongoing festive sales. The sales event which is taking place between September 23 and October 23, delivered orders to 99.6% serviceable pin codes so far.

Amazon did not reveal the exact sales figures, however.

“We are deeply humbled to serve the customers and enable sellers across Bharat this festive season. Small and medium businesses, startups, artisans, and women entrepreneurs offered a wide selection of products to our customers across India,” said Manish Tiwary, country manager of India consumer business at Amazon India.

Amazon claimed that while it saw positive customer numbers during its festive season sale, the sellers also saw significant growth. The ecommerce major said that local shops saw a 2X growth. Further, it said that over 4,000 sellers witnessed sales growth of more than 5X during the festive period.

In total, Amazon claims to have seen participation from 11 Lakh sellers, which includes 2 Lakh local stores. As was the case with customers, Amazon claimed that over 70% of sellers came from Tier II and beyond towns and cities.

“More than 35,000 sellers saw their highest-ever single-day sales; over 650 sellers became crorepatis and 23,000 sellers became lakhpatis,” said Amazon in a press statement about the growth of the sellers during the festive sale.

Talking about specific product categories, Amazon claimed mobiles and accessories saw double-digit growth as compared to last year’s sales. The ecommece major added that the growth was 5X more when compared with business as usual.

In tandem with the 5G launch in the country, a 5G smartphone has become more affordable, claimed Amazon. “More than 10 Lakh customers bought smartphones for the first time on Amazon; customers preferred brands included Xiaomi, Samsung (M Series), realme, iQOO, OnePlus and Apple,” the ecommerce platform added.

Amazon added that more than 15 Lakh new customers shopped from its fashion and beauty store with more than 85% from Tier-II cities and beyond. In its groceries and consumables category, it claims to have seen a 29% growth as compared to last year.
