Bengaluru-based B2B seafood startup Captain Fresh has roped in Mathew George as its group chief financial officer (CFO) on May 17 (Friday).
The new appointment comes amid the startup raising fresh funds, as exclusively reported by Inc42 in February. In the same month, Captain Fresh acquired CenSea Inc, a US-based frozen fish and seafood importer and distributor, to enter the lucrative North American market.
George’s appointment is expected to help solidify the finance operations and M&A activity as the company looks to scale up and expand to more markets. Captain Fresh cofounder and CEO Utham Gowda said George’s entry will be critical for the company in its journey towards a public listing.
“Mathew’s wealth of knowledge and extensive experience will be crucial to bring in financial excellence as we scale our global business. We look forward to leveraging Mathew’s leadership as we aspire to evolve into a publicly listed institution,” said Gowda.
Captain Fresh has already raised more than $25 Mn this year from new investors and is in the process of raising more funds from existing backers such as Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Evolvence, and SBI Investment.

I am excited to leverage my financial expertise to collaborate with the team to create value for our shareholders and employees,” George said in a statement.
George, a former group chief financial officer at Medi Assist, has previously had stints at Jumbo Group, HCL Technologies, Cognizant, Genpact and Accenture.
Founded in 2019, Captain Fresh is a seafood supply chain platform which also operates a marketplace for fisherfolk to sell their catch. Besides this it also works with retail outlets and supermarket chains for end-to-end operations management in sales of fishes.
The company competes with meat and seafood supply startups such as FreshtoHome, Licious, Freshma among others.
