The Government of Telangana successfully hosted its annual flagship life-sciences and healthcare forum, BioAsia 2019, in Hyderabad on February 25-27. The event concluded with a startup stage where select 76 startups presented their products across the life sciences and healthcare sector.

The Startup Stage featured 76 startups from over 300 entries, focused on providing cutting edge solutions like innovative pharma and bio-tech solutions, remote diagnostic mechanisms, heath therapeutic innovations, m-health technologies, wearable devices, among others that are instrumental in transforming life sciences and healthcare sectors.

Ambuj Chaturvedi, head- R&D, Emerging Market, Medtronic said, “A couple of streams that particularly caught my attention included ecommerce startups working towards digitalising healthcare and supply chain, service aggregators and multi-para diagnostics. Competition within these segments promises to become more aggressive and that should pave way to greater innovations.”

Around 35 angels and venture capitalists including  Fulcrum, 3one4 Capital, Unitus, Anthill participated in the forum. The jury selected the top five startups which received a cash prize of INR 25,000 each awarded by Kris Gopalakrishnan (Ex-Infy Chairman, Currently Axilor Ventures) and Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary to the Government, Government of Telangana.

Sanjay Enishetty, MD & CEO, 50k Ventures, who was also part of the jury that shortlisted the startups, said, “The solutions provided by many of these startups align with the current market trends of using deep tech solutions to solve imminent problems. We are interested in taking the conversation forward with few startups to discuss investment opportunities and also support them if they need any further assistance from the industry.”

Purpose: It is a med-tech venture that uses proprietary technology and inventive packaging to track and ensure real-time medicine non-adherence in patient.

Spectral Insights

Founded In: 2016

Headquarters: Bengaluru

Founder (s): Prasanth Perugupalli, Dipankar Das, Sumit Nath, Raghubansh Gupta, and Suhash Gerald

Purpose: Spectral Insights is a digital pathology company which offers an end-end solution for their customers to adopt Digital transformation from traditional microscopy. Their clients are Pharma and CRO companies as well as Hospitals and Diagnostic labs.

Dozee

Founded In: 2015

Headquarters: Bengaluru

Founder (s): Mudit Dandwate and Gaurav Parchani

Purpose: Monitors the sleep, heartbeat, respiration and notification on mobile. It’s a thin sensor sheet which once placed below the mattress tracks users’ heart, respiration, sleep cycle and stress levels, while all one has to do is sleep

Ekistics Solutions

Founded In: 2016

Headquarters: Bhubaneshwar

Founder (s): Gyanendra Acharya, Shubhasis Pattnaik, Sambit Mahapatra and Srikant Mohapatra

Purpose: Ekistics’ product AuRA (Autologous Reconstruction of Aortic Valve) is a cloud-based technology innovation for recreating the native aortic valve by using patient’s own tissue. AuRA intends to provide an easily reproducible, economical and customisable solution to address inherent shortcomings of prevalent prosthetic solutions.

Azooka Life Sciences

Founded In: 2015

Headquarters: Bengaluru

Founder (s): Alex D Paul, Fathima Benazir,

Purpose: Helps in staining DNA  with the help of a plant-based dye that can be conveniently used during life sciences research. Azooka Life sciences offers scientists working on the forefront of research with safe, sensitive, and fast Nucleic Acid Gel Stains, PCR Mastermixes and live-cell imaging stains as an alternative to Carcinogenic and Mutagenic dyes.

A special Social Innovation award was presented to Adiro Labs (Saaniya Mehra and Zane Barboza) which works in the field of citizen safety and women empowerment for their innovation in the field of public health policy, the AASHA kit – a sexual assault evidence collection kit, for DNA evidence and sample collection – to enhance the influx of viable DNA evidence into the Indian criminal justice system.
