Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the company posted record quarterly sales in India during the October-December period with iPhone becoming the top selling smartphone model in the country during the quarter.

“I am particularly keen on India, India set a December quarter record during the quarter and we’re opening four new stores there,” said Cook in the company’s financial results call for Q1 2025.

In 2024, Apple surpassed INR 1 lakh Cr mark in iPhone exports from India in 2024, with total shipments reaching a record $12.8 Bn (around INR 1.08 Lakh Cr).

The CEO also spoke about the company’s plan to open four new stores in the country. Apple unveiled plans to open four more retail stores in the country in October last year. The iPhone maker is planning to set up new stores in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai

In the call, he further highlighted the smartphone market potential in India, as it is the second largest smartphone market in the world and third largest for PCs and tablets.

Answering an analyst’s question about supply chain planning in India, Cook said that the company does manufacture its products both for the domestic market and export so it needs economies of scale to make sense to the manufacturer in the country.

The tech giant is now planning to bring Apple Intelligence to multiple languages including India’s localised English other than French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and simplified Chinese.

Apple’s CEO also used India’s foodtech giant Zomato’s example to show how the company is witnessing strong demands in emerging markets.

“We also see strong demands in emerging markets for example Zomato, a leading food delivery company in India has deployed thousands of Macs across its workforce,” said Cook.

Recently, Apple has kicked off discussions with auto components major Bharat Forge Ltd to make Kalyani Group one of its vendors in the country.

Earlier this month, amid rising sales of its flagship iPhone devices in the country, the company rolled out the Apple Store app in India as it looks to ramp up its retail presence in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
