Apple has reportedly kicked off discussions with auto components major Bharat Forge Ltd to make Kalyani Group one of its vendors in the country.

In case this gets through, Bharat Forge will engage in making components, including mechanics for the tech giant, ET reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

“Apple is looking to work with some of the biggest Indian companies and talks have commenced with Bharat Forge, located in Pune, Maharashtra,” another source was quoted as saying in the report.

Apple and Bharat Forge did not respond to the queries of Inc42 on the development until the story was published.

Established in 1961, Bharat Forge is one of the country’s largest multinational companies that provides critical components and solutions for its various clients across sectors such as oil and gas, aerospace, electric mobility, among others.

This development comes at a time when the iPhone manufacturer has been strengthening its presence in the manufacturing space in India via partnerships with new vendors as well as establishing its own units as a measure to reduce its dependence on China amid geopolitical tensions between the US and China.

Currently, an estimated 14% of iPhones are manufactured in India, making India the largest producer of smartphones for Apple outside China. Apple plans to increase this share to 25% between 2027 and 2028.

Evidently, various Apple vendors have also set up multiple new facilities across the country in the past year, aiming to scale their production and operations.

To note, on the list of vendors partnered with the iPhone maker, the prominent names include Foxconn, Pegatron, Jabil, Wistron and Tata Electronics.
