With Amazon Key And Cloud Cam Amazon Will Deliver Packages Inside Customer’s Homes In Their Absence

When it comes to innovating the delivery experience, Amazon is leaving no stone unturned. The world’s largest ecommerce and third largest retail company Amazon has launched a new service named Amazon Key to improve the convenience of receiving deliveries. Exclusively for Amazon Prime members, Amazon Key will enable in-home delivery and secure home access for guests and service appointments. What this means is that customers can have their packages securely delivered inside their home without having to be there.

On November 8, which has strangely become a historical day for India as well as the USA, Amazon Key will be made available in 37 selected cities across the USA for prime members at no extra cost. Thereafter, depending on the initial results, the service will be launched across the globe.

Peter Larsen, Vice President of Delivery Technology, Amazon stated, “Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors. Now, Prime members can select in-home delivery and conveniently see their packages being delivered right from their mobile phones.”

Amazon Key thus takes the delivery experience a notch higher. Using the Amazon Key app, customers stay in control and can track their delivery with real-time notifications, watch the delivery happening live or review a video of the delivery after it is complete.

According to the company statement, this state-of-the-art technology doesn’t simply replace a key with a digital passcode. Each time a delivery driver requests access to a customer’s home, Amazon verifies that the correct driver is at the right address, at the intended time, through an encrypted authentication process. Once this process is successfully completed, Amazon Cloud Cam starts recording and the door is then unlocked. No access codes or keys are ever provided to delivery drivers.

It will be a matter of time when Amazon Key service knocks on the door of Indian ecommerce market. Will Indian customers open their homes to strangers given security is such a big issue in the country, however will become evident in times to come. But while Amazon Prime is in full swing in India, Flipkart is yet to announce the relaunch of its prime service named Flipkart First. As reported by Inc42, both services, however, are distinctive in their offerings. Thus, as far as the ecommerce companies’ design thinking is concerned, Amazon looks far ahead in the race.
