Ecommerce giant Amazon on Monday (August 28) said it has deployed over 6,000 electric vehicles (EVs) so far in its India delivery fleet, which spans more than 400 cities.
In a statement, the company said it is well poised to scale the number to 10,000 by the end of 2025.
“We’re proud of the progress we’ve made towards deploying 10,000 EVs by 2025. We remain committed to decarbonising our vast transport network,” said Amazon India’s vice-president of operations Abhinav Singh.
The company said it has been actively collaborating with a range of stakeholders, from manufacturers to charging point operators and financing companies, to drive the adoption of EVs in its operations. This includes major players such as Mahindra Electric, Tata Motors, TVS, Sun Mobility, among others.
The company also said it is ‘committed’ towards decarbonising trucking in the middle-mile and last-mile operations. As part of this, the ecommerce major claims to be piloting scalable carbon reduction technologies and inking partnerships with energy infrastructure and financing companies to create bundled solutions for transporters mulling switching to electric trucks.
The development comes at a time when the government has been promoting the adoption of EVs in the country to cut down India’s carbon emissions.
Total EV registrations in the two-wheeler EV category in the country jumped to 54,232 units in July compared to 45,991 units in June, as per government data.
Besides, with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) becoming a major aspect of businesses worldwide, companies have also started focussing on increasing EV adoption.
Major Indian startups, including Flipkart, Zomato, and Swiggy, have also partnered with several EV manufacturers to fast-track adoption of EVs in their logistics fleet.
As a result, the space has been agog with activity. Amazon’s rival Flipkart has also said that it will deploy 25,000 EVs by 2030 to electrify its fleet.
Earlier this month, foodtech major Swiggy announced a partnership with Taiwanese battery-swapping solutions provider Gogoro to promote its electric smartscooters for last-mile delivery across India.
