Volkswagen Electric SUV to Rival Tata, Kia, Ola in India in 2024
By Team Inc42
Volkswagen plans to launch its first electric car, the premium electric SUV ID.4, in India in 2023, competing with Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and the upcoming Ola Electric offering.
The vehicles will be assembled at Volkswagen's Aurangabad plant in India, with imported parts and components.
Volkswagen expects 25%-30% of its total sales in India to come from EVs by 2030, with the rest from internal combustion engine vehicles.
The company is following a strategy of premiumisation and electrification to strengthen its presence in India, according to Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Brand Director Ashish Gupta.
Gupta acknowledges that the ecosystem for EVs in India is not fully ready, citing the need for mass localization of battery manufacturing to enable mass electrification.
