“Dine-in people are not going to jump back soon. People are still going to be afraid of going out. It will take time for things to come to normal, but delivery businesses are gonna thrive immediately,” — POSist cofounder and CEO Ashish Tulsian.
While the lockdown days may seem numbered, the ripple effects of the pandemic will last for years. The restaurant and food industry must go back to the drawing board and rewrite the rules of their business as Covid-19 disrupts consumers behaviour and the food industry itself.
In many ways, the revival of the food and restaurant industry is even more difficult than the travel and tourism or hospitality industry. Restaurants are usually not large corporations like airlines or hotel chains and the lockdown has hit these small and medium businesses hard with the loss of manpower, revenue and rising costs such as sanitation and tech enablement.
Beyond restaurants, supply chains have been disrupted throughout the world, which is bound to have an impact on access to food and the new models within the food supply chain.
Will dark kitchens become the norm? Will we prefer cooking to ordering in? How can restaurants evolve using technology in the post-Covid19 era?
