The Origin Story

Furniture need not be drab home essentials minus the spark of creativity and innovation. At least Sagar Shah, the founder of Torque, thinks so. A mechanical engineer by training, he decided to opt out of his family business and channel his professional expertise in precision manufacturing to blend design and utility and craft unique and durable furniture pieces.

The Differentiator

The D2C furniture brand is built on the three pillars of precision, quality and sustainability. Its flagship products include chairs, sofas, beds and dining sets, all of which can be customised to suit individual preferences. Skilled artisans make all furniture pieces at Torque’s state-of-the-art factories in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Hyderabad. However, many wood pieces are still handcrafted using traditional techniques. Despite customisation, furniture pieces are competitively priced and orders can be quickly shipped due to efficient, technology-driven production processes.

The Growth

In 2023, Torque started Mumbai-based pilot projects for home interiors, including modular kitchens and storage solutions. While products are sold on its website and ecommerce channels like Amazon and Flipkart, the brand claims to have surpassed its FY23 revenue of INR 9.69 Cr much before the last quarter of the current financial year (FY24) due to efficient operations and minimal vendor liability.

What’s Next

Torque will expand its product range and set up a large sofa unit, which will start production by April 2024. It will also enter new markets and boost its online presence. It aims to emerge as a global furniture brand by 2025, focussing on product innovation, quality and strategic partnerships. It will also contribute to the Skill India initiative and create employment opportunities by training workers.
