With the recent changes in the business landscape, ways of working have changed significantly. Considering the current situation, employees are also upskilling and evolving their expectations.

On the other hand, for businesses, it has now become important to retain top talent to gain a competitive edge. There is no denying the fact that finding and keeping talent is an expensive, time-consuming, and business-critical process. Therefore, creating the ideal environment for the staff is crucial if you want them to stick around.

Nowadays, retaining upcoming talent in companies requires a multi-pronged approach. The new generation of talent has a wide range of constantly changing expectations. They want to work for organisations that value inclusion and offer opportunities for continuous learning and development.

Here, while the role of HR is undoubtedly a very crucial one to ensure that talent stays in the company, employee experience is an important factor. Employees experience the organisation through their managers, leaders and peers. Hence, a systemic overhaul is needed if we truly value today’s workforce.

HR plays the role of an enabler through structures, policies and practices, offering employees a range of learning opportunities, including cross-functional initiatives, deputations, and creating spaces for difficult on-the-job assignments.

Leaders and managers, on the other hand, are responsible and accountable for ensuring that policies and practices are followed in letter and spirit by employees. They are responsible for ensuring that employees have a healthy, psychologically safe work environment and the best possibilities to succeed.

Therefore, developing the managerial capacity to establish a setting that is welcoming, compassionate, and nurturing is essential to employee retention.

Ways To Retain Upcoming Talent In Businesses

Real-Time Two-Way Communication

Real-time two-way communication is the key to making emerging talent stay in your organisation. It is unquestionably crucial for HR and managers to stay in close contact with employees, learn about the challenges they are encountering and their expectations, and then plan how to address those needs.

Apart from that, appreciating employees from time to time is a way of making them feel that they are contributing significantly to the business. Overall, maintaining transparent communication with employees makes them feel that they are a part of the company and provides them with a reason to stay. Whether the news is good or bad, timely and transparent communication is key. This drives a sense of trust and belongingness.

Revamping Policies

Coming up with policies that are centred around employee needs is crucial to retain upcoming talent. There is no denying the fact that achieving desired objectives is the primary goal of every organisation but that cannot be attained if employees and the company are not on the same page.

Policies and practices must be designed in a way where both employee and business goals are met. Irrespective of whether the business model is supported by remote working, a hybrid model or an in-office environment, keeping employees at the centre while contemporising policies is key to being able to attract and retain talent.

Incorporating Flexibility

No employee desires to be a part of a rigid working environment. It has become more than essential for companies to incorporate flexibility in their working environments to retain employees for the long term.

Flexibility comes in different forms. It is not just about choosing where to work, it is also about choosing the structure of compensation. It could mean flexible working hours or choosing flexible KRAs while going through a tough patch in life.

An empathic workplace that stands by its employees in times of need builds goodwill, loyalty, and a bond that is not easily broken.

All Things Considered!

Employee retention in this era of competition is a challenging task. Today, an organisation evaluates its HR, leaders, and managers in the same way that it evaluates its talent.

With the right intent and employee retention strategies, retention can be achieved. It is undeniable that a few individuals quitting a company can swiftly lead to low morale and excessive workload and burnout. Hence, it is crucial to make sure that the needs and requirements of your employees are completely met.

Listening to employees is key. Many businesses use consultants or third parties to conduct stay interviews. Businesses would gain insights into what diverse employees truly want and what areas need improvement. Based on these insights, the company can decide how to change and evolve as a whole. A practical phased-out plan that includes high-impact initiatives will produce results.
