Known for its rich cultural heritage, intellectual legacy, and vibrant arts scene, Kolkata is now making its mark in the startup ecosystem. 
According to the data compiled by Inc42, Kolkata-based startups have raised funding worth $2.68 Mn in the first quarter of 2025.
Not just this, the city raised <a href="https://inc42.com/location/kolkata/insights/">funding worth more than $249.83 Mn across 106+ funding rounds</a> <a href="https://inc42.com/location/kolkata/insights/">between 2014 and 2024</a>, reflecting a steady increase in investor interest and deal activity in the region.
Notably, West Bengal hosts 5,200+ DPIIT recognised startups, including 2,700+ women-led startups.  
Kolkata has yet to mint a unicorn. However, it does foster soonicorns like Wow! Momo. Some of the notable startups that the city nurtures are <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/indian-startup-hubs-kolkata/">Sasta Sundar, Stock Edge and Indus Net Technologies</a>.
The West Bengal government has also launched several initiatives to strengthen the startup ecosystem. Initiatives like the West Bengal Startup Policy aim to provide financial incentives, mentorship and infrastructure support to budding entrepreneurs. Additionally, the Bengal Silicon Valley Hub is being developed to offer state-of-the-art facilities for tech startups.
