Bengaluru, India’s startup capital, has cemented its position as the country’s leading edtech hub, attracting the highest share of investments in the sector. Bengaluru’s dominance is reinforced by its 46 unicorns and 698 DPIIT-recognised startups, many of which operate in the edtech space.
The edtech sector has experienced significant volatility in recent years. After a peak in 2021 ($4.6 Bn nationwide), funding plummeted to $2.44 Bn in 2022 and then further crashed to a mere $283 Mn in 2023. The year 2024 was relatively better at $568 Mn but not even close to the funding numbers of 2021 and 2022. 
The number of deals dropped from 47 in 2023 to 29 in 2024, reflecting a trend towards larger but fewer investments. The <a href="https://inc42.com/features/at-568-mn-edtech-funding-continues-to-sulk-in-2024-revival-anticipations-timid/">median ticket size fell to $2.3 Mn in 2024</a>, down 23% from $3 Mn in 2023, indicating tighter investor scrutiny. 
Bengaluru’s edtech ecosystem thrives due to its deep talent pool, access to venture capital and strong institutional support. Key players like Vedantu, Cuemath and Teachmint have emerged from the city, capitalising on its tech-driven environment. The Karnataka Startup Policy further bolsters innovation by fostering global connections and providing financial incentives. 
In 2024, online certification and test preparation startups dominated funding, securing <a href="https://inc42.com/features/at-568-mn-edtech-funding-continues-to-sulk-in-2024-revival-anticipations-timid/">75% of total edtech investments </a>($428 Mn combined). Growth-stage edtech firms raised $288 Mn, while late-stage funding remained subdued at 3.6% of the $7 Bn raised across late stage deals. Despite these gains, projections suggest a slowdown to $400 Mn in 2025.
Bengaluru’s collaborations with global tech giants and initiatives like <a href="https://inc42.com/features/govt-to-introduce-a-single-platform-for-startups-vcs-to-ensure-better-collaboration-priyank-kharge/">GIA-MAP </a>ensure it remains at the forefront of edtech innovation. While short-term challenges persist, the city’s robust ecosystem positions it to lead India’s next wave of education technology advancements.
