Homegrown ecommerce marketplace Flipkart, in a bid to improve its supply chain in Chennai and surrounding areas, has announced launch of a new fulfilment centre in the city.
With this, Flipkart now has a total of 15 fulfilment centres in India with total storage capacity of over 2.5 Mn cubic feet.
Binny Bansal, COO & co-founder of Flipkart said that the company has seen upsurge in demand for technology products like mobile phones coming from Tamil Nadu. Hence, it was important to serve the rising demand from customers.
Flipkart’s new centre is an addition to the company’s state-of-the-art logistics network and technology that aims to provide easy ecommerce access to sellers and faster delivery for customers within Chennai and TN region facilitating facilities like same day delivery.
The new warehouse will service key regions in Tamil Nadu with a dedicated team of experts. These experts will be stationed there for training the staff and streamlining operations in the facility.
According to Flipkart seller base, there are number of sellers from Tamil Nadu. With this facility, Flipkart aims to make its logistics more robust by introducing services such as automation and robotics in the warehouses.
Binny added that with an expanding range of products across categories, new facilities has become an integral part of the company’s growth plan.
Companies are gearing up to fight the battle in the upcoming festive season. Just a few days back, Amazon too had announced its investment in seven new fulfilment centres (FCs) across different cities in India.
Also, Snapdeal made an announcement sometime back to spend over $100 Mn (INR 660 Cr) to strengthen its supply chain and logistics operations.
