India is adding three internet users per second and is already the second-largest internet user base globally. Multifold growth of the smartphone users and increased penetration of the internet across the country has resulted in the northward spike of the trajectory and has collaboratively put the Indian e-commerce marketplace pegging at USD22 billion, slated to grow over 36% by 2020.

With the major working population of the average age of 29 years, e-commerce companies have a large potential and a huge market to penetrate within the Indian contours. Going niche, catering to the specific requirements or a sub-segment of the consumers and their needs is the new trend being witnessed and hence vertical e-commerce sites are the new kids on the block. Same day delivering on the verge of becoming a norm, smartphone revenues set to overtake the desktop revenues and digital stores taking over the brick-and-mortar, Indian online marketplace is touted to be the next most lucrative industry sub-segment.

However, there are fair shares of challenges being faced by the industry players. Despite large investments are being infused into the systems, e-commerce companies are failing to make profits given the rising competition in the market. There are multitudes of challenges being faced by the companies foraying into Indian online marketplace including lack of infrastructure, payment related issues, and digital literacy & consumer psyche.
