In what could be a major revenue push, Elon Musk-led social media platform X (erstwhile Twitter) has cut the prices of its subscription plans in India. The social media platform has slashed prices across all three tiers of its subscription plans (Basic, Premium, Premium+) on both its web platform and app.

For Basic, the company has cut the price by 30% to INR 170 per month from INR 244 per month earlier. Similarly, the price for Premium subscription has been slashed by 48% to INR 470 from INR 900 and for Premium+ by 42% to INR 3,000, as per a report by Moneycontrol.

The microblogging platform rolled out premium subscriptions in India in February 2023. Subsequently, it changed the plans as well as pricing multiple times.

Inc42 has reached out to X to understand the rationale behind the price decrease. The move is likely aimed at bolstering its revenue from India, which is its third largest user base. The platform has 27.3 Mn users in India as per World Population Review, about a quarter of its user base in the US.

While X has seen an erosion in its user base over the years, as per World Population Review. Meanwhile, its primary competitor Meta has seen a stark growth in its users in the country. For instance, Instagram had about 414 Mn users in the country as of February 2025, as per data by Statista.

This comes on the back of a sharp increase in internet penetration in India over the past few years. As per Inc42’s Indian Tech Startup Funding Report H1 2025, the country’s internet users are expected to rise to over 1.2 Bn by 2030, growing at 35% from 886 Mn in 2024.

The decrease in its subscription prices coincides with X’s legal battle with the Indian government. Earlier this week, the social media platform alleged that the government asked it to block 2,300 accounts in the country, prominent among them being news agency Reuters.

However, the Centre denied the allegations, saying that X had unnecessarily exploited technicalities involved around the process and didn’t unblock the URLs. This isn’t the lone incident of X finding itself at the opposite end of the Indian government. It has also engaged in legal tussles with the government over removal of posts and the Sahyog Portal.

Meanwhile, the platform is also staring at a fresh problem of its own outside of the country. Yesterday, its CEO Linda Yaccarino quit after two years.
