Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram faced widespread outage across India during the late hours of Wednesday (November 11).
As per DownDetector, complaints started trickling around 11:30 PM when users flagged that the three platforms were down for multiple users. As per the website which tracks outages, more than 24,487 users reported that WhatsApp was down. Another 33,753 users reported that they were facing issues with accessing Instagram.
As many as 6,289 users also experienced issues while accessing Facebook around the same time, as per DownDetector.
Meta confirmed the outage in a post on social media platform X and attributed it to a “technical issue”.
“We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” said Meta.
The social media juggernaut’s status dashboard also reflected that “Facebook Ads Manager”, “WhatsApp Business API”, “Messenger API for Instagram” and “Messenger Platform” were facing major disruptions across the globe.
The outage was continuing as of 1:15 AM on November 12.
Meanwhile, many users also took to X to report disruptions in accessing the three social media platforms. Some said that they were facing trouble logging in while others flagged issues with messaging and posting.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that services of Meta-owned platforms have been hit in recent months. Just last month, both WhatsApp and Instagram faced widespread outages in India, leaving multiple users unable to access their accounts.
In June, Instagram experienced an outage that lasted several minutes and impacted thousands of users worldwide. Prior to that, Instagram and WhatsApp went down for several hours in March too, causing disruptions for local businesses.
The issues come at a time when Meta has been dousing fires on multiple fronts in India. The social media giant is facing a fine of INR 213.14 Cr from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for allegedly abusing its dominant position in connection with WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy case.
