Meta-owned messaging service WhatsApp is suffering a partial or total outage, according to user complaints surfacing over the past hour or so on Twitter.
The internet outage detection website Downdetector noted that the reports started coming in at 12:33 PM IST, with the number crossing 11,000 reports by 12:48 PM IST.
The reports have since climbed to almost 30,000, as of 1:00 PM IST. According to the news agency ANI, the messaging app has been down for the last 45 minutes or so.
As a result, the hashtag #whatsappdown is trending on Twitter, with users from several geographies complaining of an outage.
It appears that while the majority of users have reported an outage in India, users from Europe and other parts of the world have also reported an outage. According to Downdetector, an instance of WhatsApp suffering an outage is being reported across multiple Asian countries such as Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and more.
In the Netherlands, there have been more than 122K reports of WhatsApp being down, while in the UK, more than 66K users have reported disruption in service. Even in the US, there have been almost 4K reports regarding the same. In Africa and Latin America as well, users have reported outages.
Users have reported an inability to send or receive messages on the platform. We saw that WhatsApp’s voice and video calling features are also down at present.
A Meta spokesperson said in a statement, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”
As of 2:22 PM on October 25, the services have been restored.
The Meta-owned messaging platform has come under fire recently, as the Competition Commission of India (CCI) was green-lit by the Supreme Court recently to conduct an investigation into its privacy policy updated back in March 2021. The social media messaging app moved the SC after the Delhi High Court ruled in favour of a CCI probe.
