[Update] Tesla Launches India’s First Charging Station In Mumbai

Electric vehicle giant Tesla has opened its first charging station in India at Mumbai’s One BKC in Bandra-Kurla Complex.

The company confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X, sharing the exact location and images of the new charging station setup.

Elon Musk-owned Tesla has reportedly announced that it will launch its first supercharging station in India next week, starting with Mumbai.

The new Tesla charging station in Mumbai will be the first in the country and will include four V4 supercharging stalls (DC fast chargers) and four destination charging stalls (AC chargers), as per PTI.

“This will be the first of the eight supercharging sites that were announced during the launch in Mumbai, with more planned across the country, to provide the optimal cross-country experience,” the company’s statement was quoted in the report.

The report further said that these charging stalls are known for their ability to offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW, starting at INR 24 per kW and destination chargers providing 11kW at INR 14 per kW.

Tesla, after a lengthy wait for regulatory approvals, officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its Model Y RWD (rear wheel drive) in Mumbai last month.

The company carried out the process of homologation for at least two of its electric car models in March this year, where the Indian arm of the electric vehicle maker, Tesla India Motor & Energy Pvt. Ltd., submitted two applications for homologation of the Model Y and Model 3 cars in India.

Of these, only one was reportedly approved by concerned authorities.

Following this, Tesla’s chief executive Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the potential for collaboration in technology and innovation.

Reports also surfaced from earlier this year that the Centre is planning to ramp up its EV charging infrastructure across major public infrastructure, including at airports, highways, railways and ports, with a focus on battery-swapping services.

Under the INR 10,900 Cr PM E-DRIVE scheme, INR 2,000 Cr has been allocated for setting up EV charging points and battery-swapping stations.

So far, Maharashtra has more than 3,000 charging stations, making it the state to top the charging infra category, based on Inc42’s report.

Meanwhile, aiming to boost the electric four wheelers in the country, the central government is also working towards building a super app for EV users, under the PM E-Drive scheme.

India’s electric vehicle market is on an unprecedented growth trajectory, poised to become a $132 Bn industry by 2030, based on recent Inc42 data.
