During her Union Budget 2025 speech, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government will set up a National Geospatial Mission to develop foundational geospatial infrastructure and data.

The government will use PM Gati Shakti (infrastructure management platform) to facilitate the modernisation of land records, urban planning and design of infrastructure projects.

Notably, under the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), the government is targetting three state spatial data infrastructure mechanisms for the year ending March 2026 (FY26).

This comes after the Union government notified the National Geospatial Policy in 2023, which aims to build a national framework that supports liberalisation and commercialisation of the sector.

At the time, the government was mulling setting up ‘Geospatial Incubation Centres’ and ‘Geospatial Industry Accelerators’ in collaboration with the industry and other stakeholders to spur local startups.

It was also announced that the government would set up an advisory body under the name of the Geospatial Industrial Development Board. However, the government has yet to give updates on the same.

The geospatial space is growing in India and has seen companies like MapMyIndia and other emerging players such as LocaleAI, SatNav, SatGuide, and Aarav Unmanned Systems make major breakthroughs in the sector.

Even drone startups working in the sector have started getting active on the investor radar. In November 2024, geospatial startup Matrix Geo Solutions secured close to $1 Mn (around INR 10 Cr) in its pre-IPO funding round.

Geospatial analytics startup DeepMatrix, too, raised $1.6 Mn (INR 13.28 Cr) in a pre-Series A funding round last year.

Meanwhile, MapmyIndia has been actively expanding its offerings and partnerships. The company exhibits substantial revenue growth potential. JM Financial projects its revenue to reach over INR 10,000 Cr by FY27/28.

As per a report by Mordor Intelligence, the Indian geospatial analytics market is expected to grow from $1.38 Bn in 2024 to $2.70 Bn by 2029.
