SUMMARY

The total two-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) registered in June stood at 42,233 units versus 39,520 units in May, as per the Vahan portal

After a 27.3% MoM decline in May, Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola Electric’s vehicle registrations dipped 36.5% in June to 5,874 units

Okinawa Autotech’s registrations dipped 25% MoM to 6,980 units in June, but the company maintained its top position with the highest number of registrations

After a month-on-month (MoM) drop in registrations in April and May, electric two-wheelers witnessed a marginal rise in vehicle registrations in June. The total two-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) registered in June stood at 42,233 units, as per the latest data on Vahan portal on July 2.

The registrations increased 6.8% MoM, taking the total number of vehicles registered in the category to 2.4 lakh units so far in 2022.

While several electric two-wheeler companies saw a rise in demand, the trend was a little different for big names like Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, and Pure EV.

After a 27.3% MoM decline in May, Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola Electric’s vehicle registrations declined 36.5% MoM in June to 5,874 units.

Following the drop in its monthly vehicle registrations, Ola Electric also lost its last month’s second position to Ampere Vehicles. After a drop in registrations last month, Ampere Vehicles saw 6,541 units of vehicle registrations in June, an over 12% increase MoM.

Next to Ampere Vehicles was Hero Electric’s position. Following a sharp decline over the last two consecutive months, Hero Electric’s total vehicle registrations in June were almost back to its April figure at 6,503 units with a 128% MoM jump.

While Okinawa Autotech maintained its last month’s top position in terms of total registrations, the electric two-wheeler maker’s June vehicle registrations dipped 25% to 6,980 units.

Besides Hero Electric and Ampere Vehicles, other major two-wheeler EV names such as Ather Energy, Revolt also witnessed an MoM increase in their total registrations in June.

Ather Energy’s total vehicle registrations stood at 3,808 units in June as against 3,338 units in May and 2,451 units in April.

It is pertinent to note that unlike its main competitors, Ather Energy is seeing a steady and gradual rise in its sales figures.

As per the startup’s latest regulatory filing, Ather Energy’s retail sales of escooters stood at 23,408 units in FY22 as compared to 5,523 units sold in the previous fiscal year.

Similarly, Revolt also witnessed a 53% increase in total vehicle registrations at 2,423 units.

On the other hand, Pure EV, which was among the companies under scanner for the recent fire incidents with two-wheeler EVs, also saw a decline in vehicle registrations to 1,125 units in June from 1,466 units in May and 1,757 units in April this year.

Following the escooter fire incidents and the global supply chain crisis for EV batteries and some other key components, the two-wheeler EV segment had witnessed a sharp decline in May 2022 sales in India.

Besides, last week, reports said that Ola Electric’s escooter sales were on a decline over a few weeks, with the startup selling just 130-200 units per day. The electric mobility startup’s switch from a multiple-payment window model to a one-time full payment for its escooters was cited as the reason for the decrease in sales.

Overall electric vehicle (EV) registrations also rose in June. After a decline in EV registrations to 65,879 units in May, it rose about 10% MoM to 72,416 units in June, as per the Vahan data.
