Notified earlier this month, the new online gaming rules effectively bar all minors from playing online real money online games
Online gaming platforms Games24x7, Junglee Games, and Head Digital Works have reportedly dragged the Tamil Nadu government to the Madras High Court (HC) over the state’s recently promulgated online real money gaming rules.
As per Moneycontrol, the three companies have filed writ petitions before the HC and have sought directions to stay the implementation of the new rules. The platforms have also moved the HC to obtain an interim injunction preventing the local authorities from initiating any coercive action against them.
This comes weeks after the state government notified new online gaming rules, which effectively bar all minors (under the age of 18) from playing online real money games. In an official gazette notification dated February 12, the government said that the new rules came into effect immediately, which left many platforms scrambling to comply with new norms.
As per the report, the petitions have also urged the HC to declare the new rules “arbitrary, void, illegal, and unconstitutional”.
This follows the state government, earlier this month, notifying the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (Real Money Games) Regulations, 2025, which ban real money online games in the state between midnight and 5 AM.
The new rules make it mandatory for online real money gaming platforms to undertake know your customer (KYC) verification for account creation and ensure that the initial login into the account of the user is authenticated using Aadhaar-based verification.
Not just this, the new norms mandate the platforms to provide an option for the users to set daily, weekly, and monthly monetary limits.
Additionally, online real money gaming platforms have to display pop-up caution messages when a player plays continuously for more than one hour. Such caution pop-up messages should appear at an interval of every 30 minutes indicating how long they have been playing,” as per the official notification.
In addition, the gaming platforms will also have to “prominently” display the message “Online gaming is adductive in nature” on their login pages.
