After Mumbai, Tesla may soon be zipping down Delhi roads.

The Elon Musk-run electric vehicle major is set to open its first showroom in the Capital on August 11, marking its second retail outlet in India after Mumbai.

According to an NDTV report, the showroom will be located at Worldmark, Aerocity, near Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Tesla began its India operations last month, rolling out its Model Y SUV at its Mumbai showroom. The vehicle is being imported as a completely built unit (CBU) from Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

The company has also taken on lease a 33,000 sq ft retail and service space on Sohna Road in Gurugram for INR 40 Lakh a month. The lease is for nine years.

Tesla’s Model Y will compete with electric SUVs from brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

The company’s latest expansion comes at a time when Vietnam’s top EV maker Vinfast is also making a foray into the Indian market. The company is in talks with several existing component suppliers, some of which are planning to relocate part of their production to VinFast’s upcoming industrial park in Tamil Nadu.

VinFast inaugurated its first manufacturing plant in India at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. The move aligns with the company’s broader India strategy, which includes a partnership with Indian startup BatX Energies to recycle lithium-ion batteries and recover critical minerals.

Announced last year, VinFast’s investment plan with the Tamil Nadu government totals up to $2 billion, beginning with an initial $500 Mn over the first five years. The plant will start with an annual production capacity of 50,000 EVs, eventually scaling up to 150,000 units.

VinFast also has aggressive go-to-market plans in India. It will launch its electric SUV models, the VF6 and the VF7, later in August. While pricing and exact launch dates are yet to be disclosed, pre-bookings began in July.

The company recently opened its first dealership in Surat, Gujarat, and aims to expand to 35 dealerships across more than 27 cities by the end of 2025. Additionally, VinFast is entering India’s EV charging space through its subsidiary, VinGreen.
