Taking another step towards establishing its presence in India, Elon Musk-led EV manufacturer Tesla has reportedly finalised two locations for its showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai.

Citing sources, Reuters reported that the company has finalised locations in Delhi’s Aerocity and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex for its showrooms, which would be spread across an area of 5,000 sq ft.

These showrooms would be exclusively for the sales of the company’s imported EVs and won’t house service centres, the report said.

This comes after it was reported in December last year that Tesla was in talks with real estate major DLF to scout places for its showroom in India, including DLF’s Avenue Mall in Delhi and Gurugram’s Cyber Hub complex.

The development also comes amid the company’s much anticipated entry into the Indian market. Last week, Tesla CEO and the world’s richest man Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US.

In a post on X, Modi said that his discussion with Musk saw the latter discuss issues he is “passionate about such as space, mobility, technology and innovation”.

Earlier today, it was reported that Tesla has begun hiring in India for its entry into the country. The company has posted 13 job openings on its website, ranging from vehicle service, sales and customer support to operations positions based in Mumbai.

Tesla’s plans to foray into the burgeoning Indian EV market have seen multiple pause and play in the recent years. Earlier, Musk cited India’s high import duties as the major barrier to Tesla’s entry into the country.

This pain point was addressed by the Indian government in March 2024, when the Centre introduced a new policy under which EV companies would have to pay lower duty on imports of EVs if they agree to set up manufacturing facilities in the country.

Tesla would compete with the likes of MG Hector, Mahindra, China’s BYD, Tata, Hyundai in the Indian EV car market.
