Tata Group Planning To Create 5 Lakh Jobs In EV, Semicon By 2030: Chandrasekaran

SUMMARY

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran affirmed that the group will create 5 Lakh manufacturing jobs across battery, semiconductor, EV and solar sectors by 2030

The conglomerate marked several milestones in 2024, including groundbreaking ceremonies at seven new manufacturing plants including India's first semiconductor fab in Gujarat

The group's tech arm TCS and Tejas Networks have delivered India's first indigenous 4G mobile telecom stack for BSNL while retail and hospitality businesses continue to scale up

Tata Group is planning to create 5 Lakh manufacturing jobs over the next five years across battery, semiconductor, electric vehicle and solar industries by 2030.

In his annual letter to employees, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran outlined the group’s plans for job creation through investments in manufacturing facilities across India.

“Over the next half a decade, these will come in part from investments in facilities across India – factories and projects that will produce batteries, semiconductors, electric vehicles, solar equipment and other critical hardware destined to play a central role in the economy of tomorrow,” he wrote in the letter.

“This is in addition to the many services jobs we expect to introduce across retail, tech services, and hospitality, among sectors.”

“Such moves are exciting for our group and for India, but more importantly, they give hope to the one million young people who enter our workforce each month. Thankfully, manufacturing has powerful multiplayer effects; indirect employment opportunities from sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing are substantial,” he said.

The announcement comes as Tata Group marked several manufacturing milestones in 2024, including groundbreaking ceremonies at over seven new plants. These include India’s first semiconductor fab at Dholera in Gujarat and an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam.

“There is the electronic assembly plant in Narasupura, Karnataka and automotive plant in Panakkam, Tamil Nadu and MRO facilities in Bengaluru, Karnataka. We also have new battery cell manufacturing factories in Sanand, Gujarat and in Somerset, UK. We inaugurated the C295 final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat and began solar module production in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu,” he said.

On the technology front, Chandrasekaran noted, “Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Tejas Networks Ltd. have delivered India’s first indigenous 4G mobile telecom stack for BSNL and are ready for 5G.”

“Our retail companies continue to scale up. Air India has brought together four airlines to create one integrated airline group to serve India and the world. And Indian Hotels’ Taj brand continues to be the world’s strongest hotel brand,” he added.

The chairman paid tribute to Ratan Tata, calling him an “irreplaceable role model and leader” while noting that “though it is difficult to begin a new year without Mr Tata, there is comfort in knowing that the business he devoted his life to continues to thrive.”

Speaking on future trends, Chandrasekaran said “AI can transform healthcare in other profound ways, not only enhancing how we understand and treat diseases but also how we diagnose them. Machine learning is being used more in environmental research, while large language models hold the potential to significantly expand access to clinical care… While AI-led breakthrough in healthcare and mobility can help the whole of humanity, manufacturing has the potential to transform our economy in India.”
