OpenAI has reportedly asked an Indian court to dismiss a plea from a group of book publishers who claim its ChatGPT service infringes on their copyrights.
The publishers argued that ChatGPT provides book summaries and extracts from unlicensed copies, but OpenAI insists it only uses publicly available data protected by fair use principles, as per Reuters.
Two days back (January 26), multiple domestic and global book publishers reportedly banded together and sued AI giant for alleged copyright infringement.
The Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) also filed a lawsuit against the company on behalf of all its members, including homegrown players like Rupa Publications and S Chand and Co as well global giants such as Bloomsbury, Penguin Random House, Cambridge University Press and Pan Macmillan.
The case was filed in December by the FIP.
The matter started back in November 2024 when the global news agency ANI filed a case against OpenAI where it alleged the latter for exploiting its content for commercial gain in two means, where it uses ANI’s content to train its large language models (LLMs) and ChatGPT producing its content verbatim in response to users’ queries.
In response to the above allegations, the company responded that any order to remove training data powering its chatbot ChatGPT would be inconsistent with its legal obligations in the US. It added that the laws of the North American country require the companies to preserve the data while hearings are pending.
Last week, ChatGPT was non-operational for almost 37 minutes due to a major outage. The GenAI chatbot suffered a bad gateway error glitch which led to increased error rates for it. Moreover, OpenAI’s API also suffered a major outage of 1 hour. According to Downdetector, about 4,000 Indian users submitted reports of ChatGPT being non-functional.
