OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Go Free For Users In India

AI major OpenAI is set to modify its terms for low-cost subscription plan ChatGPT Go by scrapping the subscription fees for one year. Users who signed up for the plan during the limited promotional period, starting November 4, would be eligible for this.

Besides, the existing ChatGPT Go subscribers would also be eligible to avail the benefits for this. OpenAI is yet to share more details on this in the following days.

The company said the move is part of its first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, which it will be hosting on November 4.

“Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI,” Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, said in a statement.

Launched in August, ChatGPT Go is a plan initially rolled out as an India-only option. Priced at INR 399 per month, the plan could be purchased via UPI since launch.

Go subscribers benefit from the extended access to its flagship model GPT-5.

The company said that the number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled within one month of the plan’s launch.

With the visible positive response in India, the company has made ChatGPT Go available in 89 countries including Madagascar, Egypt, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Bhutan, and others.

The AI giant’s bid to penetrate the Indian market is in line with the bullish stance it has asserted on its India prospects in recent times. Recently, the company claimed India as ChatGPT’s second-largest market and Go’s promotion is a continuation of its “India-first” commitment.

“If there is one large society in the world that seems most enthusiastic to transform with AI right now, it’s India. India’s momentum is unmatched anywhere in the world … I think India may be our largest market in the world, at some point, in the not very distant future,” OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman recently said.

The expansion of internet access across India, which is the world’s most populous nation, makes it a fertile ground for the AI giant. As of now, India has more than 886 Mn internet users, a number which is projected to grow by 35% to cross the 1.2 Bn mark by 2030, based on Inc42’s recent data.

Prior to ChatGPT Go’s launch, the AI company rolled out its latest version of its large language model GPT-5 in early August, for users across the globe. Back then, Altman hinted that OpenAI is working with local partners to make AI work for Indian use cases.

The ChatGPT parent is also reportedly looking to set up a data centre in India, with at least 1 GW capacity, and it is currently looking for local partners on the same.
