ONDC CBO Shireesh Joshi Steps Down

Shireesh Joshi has stepped down from his role of chief business officer of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) after a three-and-half year stint at the ecommerce network.

As per his LinkedIn profile, Joshi quit the government-backed network last month. He was roped in as CBO and president of network expansion at ONDC in 2021.

Joshi didn’t immediately respond to Inc42’s queries on the development, which was first reported by BW Marketing World.

During his innings at ONDC, Joshi led the government’s efforts to promote local businesses and foster a decentralised, open ecommerce model, led by a not-profit company.

Under his leadership, ONDC helped small merchants gain access to a wider pool of customers, thereby making ecommerce more inclusive and accessible. The ecommerce network’s partnerships with new-age tech companies such as PhonePe’s Pincode, Ola, Elastic Run, Nazara, KiranaPro, CoRover, among others, also paved the way for smaller startups, businesses and retailers to thrive in the ecosystem.

As per information available on his LinkedIn account, Joshi has been the founder and CEO of Priism Consulting for the past 13 years.

Prior to joining ONDC, Joshi held leadership roles at companies like Godrej, Bharti Airtel, PepsiCo International and Procter & Gamble.

The Indian government launched ONDC in 2021 to bring small businesses online and democratise ecommerce. The DPIIT-backed network was envisaged to create a level playing field for sellers, buyers, and service providers across India, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

As of January 2025, ONDC had 7.64 Lakh sellers and service providers across over 616 cities in the country.

ONDC has processed more than 154.4 Mn orders till date. In December 2024 alone, the platform processed over 15.4 Mn orders and average daily transactions touched 4.9 Lakh.
