Ola Electric Dismisses LG Energy Tech Leak Claims For 4680 Bharat Cell

Ola Electric has dismissed media reports that claimed that an employee of LG Energy Solution attempted to pass on pouch cell technology IPs to the EV manufacturer, terming the claims as “misleading and completely baseless”.

In a statement, Ola Electric said that its 4680 Bharat Cell is based on the “most advanced” dry electrode technology in a cylindrical form factor, and surpasses the pouch cell technology mentioned in the reports. 

For context, a South Korean publication recently claimed that an unnamed former LG Energy Solution executive attempted to pass on the IPs to Ola Electric to create “Bharat cell” and capitalise on India’s PLI manufacturing scheme. 

“… the old and dated pouch cell technology, which the report claims were leaked, is not even an area of research or commercial interest for Ola Electric… The insidious media report emerges at a telling time, just as Ola’s 4680 Bharat Cell, has entered commercial production,” Ola Electric said in the statement. 

The development comes days after Ola Electric received a certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for the 5.2 kWh configuration variant of its 4680 battery cell pack. 

 “The fear of losing market opportunities, including a significant customer in Ola Electric, is prompting the foreign rival to attack an indigenous battery innovation. The timing of this selective leak to South Korean media, and its swift, unverified replication by a section of the Indian press, appears dubious at best,” the statement added. 

While announcing its Q2 FY26 results, Ola Electric said it has begun integrating its in-house 4680 Bharat cells into its vehicles and some deliveries have been made. Over the next 6–9 months, the company plans to transition all its automotive products to these cells.

Ola Electric said it has invested “heavily” in R&D and manufacturing infrastructure and has filed for 720 patents, of which 124 are granted.

The development adds to the list of legal troubles being faced by the EV company. Its cofounder Bhavish Aggarwal and a senior executive were last month named in an FIR filed by the Bengaluru Police after an employee accused them of harassment in a note before dying by suicide. The company rejected the allegations.

Additionally, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) recently sent the EV major its investigation report in the matter pertaining to alleged violations of consumer rights, deficiency in service and misleading advertisement. 

On the financial front, Ola Electric managed to trim its consolidated net loss by over 15% to INR 418 Cr in Q2 FY26 from INR 495 Cr in the same quarter last year. Revenue from operations declined 43% YoY to INR 690 Cr during the quarter under review from INR 1,214 Cr in the second quarter of FY25.

Ola Electric said it commissioned a cell manufacturing capacity of 2.5 GWh in Q2 FY26 and expects it to reach 5.9 GWh by March 2026 and 20 GWh by FY27. The company plans to use the additional capacity for Ola Shakti, under which it forayed into the residential battery energy storage system (BESS) segment last month. It also plans to enter the commercial energy storage segment.

At 1 PM, the shares of Ola Electric were trading 4.98% lower at INR 44.26 apiece.
