The development comes more than a month after Meta cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the subscription plan

Meta, the parent company of social media platforms Facebook and Instagram has announced the pricing for its subscription programme, Meta Verified. This has come more than a month after Meta cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the subscription plan.

Reportedly, Meta Verified is set to cost INR 1,450 a month for the mobile version and INR 1,099 for the web version.

The move also comes months after Elon Musk’s Twitter launched a similar programme, Twitter Blue.

According to Meta’s website, Meta Verified has been launched in the US, Australia and New Zealand for now, with a wider rollout coming later this year.

The social media giant has set a price of $14.99 (around INR 1,230) per month for users to receive a blue tick on their profiles across both Facebook and Instagram on Android and iOS.

Additionally, a user can opt for a Facebook-only web-based option, which costs around $11.99 (around INR 985) per month. This option would be more useful for brand pages on Facebook, which mostly operate via the website.

However, Meta is currently beta-testing the subscription model in select geographies, and the users will have to join a waiting list to get their accounts on Facebook and Instagram verified.

Users opting for Meta Verified will also have access to several other features, such as direct account support, proactive account security and protection against impersonation, increased reach on Facebook and Instagram and other exclusive extras.

However, a user has to be at least 18 years of age to be able to opt for Meta Verified, and for that, Meta will ask for a selfie and a government ID, which could be an Aadhaar card or passport in India’s case. The government ID needs to be of a matching name of the user account looking to get verified.

Meta’s move comes after it fired 21,000 employees over two layoffs in November 2022 and March 2023. Further, in its latest reported quarter (Q4 2022), Meta’s net income declined 55% to $4.6 Bn from $10.3 Bn in the corresponding quarter last year.
