The new EV policy, which will be effective until 2030, includes a provision of INR 1,993 Cr over the next five years for its implementation

The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the new electric vehicle (EV) policy 2025, aimed at boosting electric mobility adoption and manufacturing across the state.

The policy, which will be effective until 2030, includes a provision of INR 1,993 Cr over the next five years for its implementation.

A PTI report said that select EVs plying on highways will be given a toll waiver under the new EV Policy. Besides, subsidies will also be provided on purchase of such vehicles to help in combating air pollution.

“The state government has approved a new EV policy, under which passenger EVs will be given subsidies. EV manufacturing and their use should increase in the state,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying in the report.

Further, the policy also focused on clean mobility transition model adoption by giving sops to those switching to EVs till 2030.

The CM further said that under the new EV policy, charging infrastructure will be strengthened across the state and charging facilities will be installed on national highways at an interval of 25 km.

The new policy will cover electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, private four-wheelers, state transport corporation buses, private buses, transport undertakings under civic bodies, with a 10% concession on purchase on its original cost.

This also comes close on the heels of the Delhi government reportedly considering offering a purchase subsidy of up to INR 30,000 for buying two-wheeler EVs under its upcoming Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0.

Maharashtra Govt’s Proposals On EVs

Notably, the Maharashtra government announced plans to levy a “vehicle tax” of 6% on EVs priced above INR 30 Lakh, in March as part of its Budget 2025-26 plans. Weeks later, the state reportedly shelved the vehicle tax proposal.

Earlier this month, the state cabinet also approved a proposal to allow bike taxis to operate in Maharashtra, where only electric bike taxis will be allowed to ply on the roads under the new policy which aims to promote EVs, aiming to generate 20,000 to 25,000 jobs.

Remarkably, Maharashtra secured the second spot both in adoption tally with 2.5 Lakh EVs registered last year and in charging station count with 3,728 units. In the last five years, Maharashtra topped the states in terms of four-wheeler EV sales last year, with more than 22K units sold, as per the Inc42 report.
