Telecom infrastructure giant Indus Towers has got the go-ahead from its board to enter the EV charging space as electric vehicles have begun pacing up, driving related sectors such as batteries and charging stations in the fast lane.

“Aligning with the government’s emphasis on electric vehicle (EV) adoption and infrastructure augmentation, Indus Towers has decided to pursue suitable business opportunities in the EV charging infrastructure sector and received the approval of its board of directors for the same, subject to prudential framework,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

It recently launched pilot EV charging stations in Gurugram and Bengaluru, it said.

Indus Towers is India’s one of the largest telecom infra companies that owns and manages telecom towers and communication structures for various mobile operators. It runs a portfolio of 234,643 towers and 379,236 co-locations across 22 telecom circles. It counts among its clients all four telecom service providers – Airtel, Vodafone, Jio and BSNL.

The Gurugram-based telecom infra major decided to enter the EV charging space after the Centre geared up to strengthen the operations of battery makers and charging infrastructure providers.

Earlier this year, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal met executives and stakeholders from the electric vehicle industry to discuss various issues, including infrastructure for battery charging and swapping, that await redressal for a faster transition to green mobility.

The company said it is well positioned to contribute to the EV charging infrastructure space by leveraging its expertise in managing and providing space, power, and operations and maintenance for seamless operation and efficiency.
