IndiaAI Mission: Fractal, Tech Mahindra Among 8 New Players Picked To Build LLMs

The Centre has selected eight new entities to develop homegrown foundational large language models (LLMs) under the IndiaAI Mission.

Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, Avataar AI, Zeinteiq Aitech Innovations, Genloop Intelligence, NeuroDX (Intellihealth), Shodh AI, and IIT Bombay’s BharatGen consortium are the eight players who have been selected, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at the curtain raiser event for AI Impact Summit 2026 today.

IIT Bombay is said to be working on a trillion-parameter model, backed by financial support of INR 988.6 Cr from the Mission.

Earlier, three startups were selected in the first round of IndiaAI Mission to build AI models – Sarvam AI, Gnani.ai, and Gan AI.

The IT minister said that the first batch of models is “progressing well” and expressed confidence that India will have working LLMs by the time of the AI Impact Summit in February next year.

The government also plans to release an AI framework in the next 10 days to guide model development and deployment.

Alongside model development, the IndiaAI Mission has been scaling its computing infrastructure. IndiaAI Mission CEO Abhishek Singh recently said the government is working to deploy 38,000 GPUs across the country at affordable rates to strengthen research and innovation. The plan also includes setting up 600 data labs nationwide.

As of June 2025, India had already deployed over 17,300 GPUs with the help of cloud and data service providers like Yotta Data Services and NxtGen Cloud Technologies.

A third round of tenders has since added nearly 3,850 more GPUs, including NVIDIA H100 units and Google’s sixth-generation Trillium TPUs. The government has also been pushing costs down, with compute power being made available for as low as INR 65 per hour.

Approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2024 with an outlay of INR 10,372 Cr over five years, the IndiaAI Mission is designed to boost the country’s AI ecosystem by offering startups, research institutions, and universities access to cutting-edge compute power.
