Cricket World Cup was the most searched news in 2019 followed by Lok Sabha elections, says Google as it looks back into the search trends of the year.

Google India recently announced its ‘Year in Search’ results which spoke about standout moments in search across news, sporting events, personalities, movies, songs and more.

“The top 10 overall list of trending search terms this year reflected the country’s excitement around events like the Cricket World Cup, the Lok Sabha elections followed by the buzzing interest that surrounded the launch of Chandrayaan 2,” said the report.

“Movies like Kabir Singh, Gully Boy, Mission Mangal, Joker, and a double-entry of Marvel’s blockbusters — Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel also featured in the overall list,” it added.

In the sporting searches category, Cricket World Cup, was followed by the Pro Kabaddi League and international sporting events including Wimbledon, Copa América, and the tennis tournaments (including the Australian, French and US Open).

The report also talks about the most interesting search terms. They were mostly centered around ‘How to..’, and ‘What is…’. For instance, Google Search saw a lot of questions including ‘How to vote’, ‘How to get Fastag’, ‘How to select channels as per TRAI’, ‘What is Article 370?’, ‘What is howdy Modi?’, ‘What is DLS method in cricket?’, ‘What is Article 15?’ among others.

Local searches around ‘Near me…’ reveal the increasing attention given to fitness and grooming by millennials. The top questions searched were “Dance classes near me” followed by “Salons near me”. Sadly, “Air quality Index near me” also saw a lot of searches this year.

Interestingly, among the most searched personalities this year, IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman topped the list, followed by Lata Mangeshkar and Yuvraj Singh.

Google publishes search trend results every year. 2018 also saw sports lead other search categories. FIFA World Cup 2018 was the most searched item in 2018 followed by Live Score, IPL 2018. How to send stickers on WhatsApp was also on the top list of searches.

Google India recently also said that nine out of 10 new internet users in the country at present are consuming online content in Indian languages.

The company said that among all the Indian languages, Hindi emerged to be the most popular one for consuming online content. It revealed that Hindi web consumption has grown over 90% during 2015-16, while the English content growth was only 19%.

Another feather to Google’s cap was the list released by the British Internet-based market research group, YouGov. The report said that the Internet search giant Google has topped the Indian list of top 10 brands of 2019 across the world. The new lists also saw some new entrants including OnePlus and Taj hotels & Palaces.

The research group had analysed more than 38 markets for the report and announced a separate result for each of these markets. Out of these 38 reports, Google has been amongst the top 10 brands in 11 markets. In the India ranking Google was followed by OnePlus and MakeMyTrip, which stood at the second and third place respectively.
