Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has reportedly said that the government is set to unveil a legal framework to ensure data privacy that will promote free flow of data among trusted global partners.

“India is the best place in the world to provide sustainable infrastructure to the digital world. In addition to a robust legal system, India is going to bring out a new legal framework to ensure data privacy that will encourage free flow of data among trusted partners,” Goyal was quoted as saying in ANI report.

The minister made his comments while addressing the UK India Business Council’s ‘UK-India Technology Futures Conference’ held in Delhi NCR yesterday (November 21).

As per the report, Goyal also highlighted how data processing systems will consume a significant portion of energy in the future, given the rise in lean towards sustainability practices and rapid digital transformation.

“A major portion of energy will be consumed by systems that will churn out data, and that will have an impact on sustainability issues,” he added.

The minister also noted India’s extensive interconnected energy grid, which will reach a thousand gigawatts by 2030, combining traditional and renewable energy sources.

This comes at a time when global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle have been strengthening their presence in the country with their investments and partnerships towards building data centres, throughout this year.

The report further mentioned Goyal’s proposal of five areas for partnership for various areas of development for both nations.

The proposal covered the development of AI learning platforms and virtual reality integration into education, advancing precision farming and residue-free agriculture to improve productivity, among others.

It is to note that, earlier this month, the union commerce and industry minister urged industry players to ensure quick transition to electric mobility to achieve India’s goal of 100% electric vehicle nation, while addressing the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
