The FM announced a number of other measures in her budget speech aimed at ramping up manufacturing, including a new scheme to boost the toy manufacturing ecosystem

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on February 1, proposed the establishment of a National Manufacturing Mission.

“Our government will set up a National Manufacturing Mission covering small, medium and large industries for furthering Make In India by providing policy support, execution, road maps, governance and monitoring framework for central ministries and states,” finance minister Sitharaman said during her Budget 2025-26 speech.

This came as India’s vast manufacturing industry, which contributes around 17% of the nation’s GDP, was expecting key policy updates from the central government.

The proposed Mission aims to enhance domestic value addition and strengthen the ecosystem for solar PV cells, PV batteries, motors and controllers, electrolysers, wind turbines, high-voltage transmission equipment, and grid-scale batteries.

The minister also underlined that manufacturing would serve as the second engine of the country’s growth.

Meanwhile, the FM also announced a number of other measures in her budget speech aimed at ramping up manufacturing, including a new scheme to boost the toy manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The initiative includes creating toy production clusters that will foster local manufacturing capabilities and innovation, while focussing on sustainability.

In addition, five National Centres of Excellence for skilling will be set up with “global expertise and partnerships” to equip the youth with manufacturing skills to “Make for India, Make for the World”. The partnerships will cover curriculum design, training of trainers, a skills certification framework, and periodic reviews.
