Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reportedly mulling to invest $8.3 Bn in cloud infrastructure across Maharashtra to further expand its cloud capacity in India.

This move aligns with the company’s broader commitment of $12.7 Bn in India by 2030 to cater to the growing demand for cloud services and AI.

According to a report by TechCircle, the Maharashtra government and AWS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos to formalise their partnership.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that this collaboration will strengthen technological infrastructure, generate employment opportunities, and drive economic growth. AWS CEO Matt Garman stated that the investment is projected to contribute over $15 Bn to India’s GDP and support more than 81,000 full-time jobs in the local data center supply chain by 2030.

AWS invested $3.7 Bn in Maharashtra between 2016 and 2022, launching its first India cloud region in Mumbai (2016) and a second in Hyderabad (2022). These regions offer low-latency, resilient data storage within India.

The new investment is expected to add $15.3 Bn to India’s GDP by 2030, boosting sectors like telecom, construction, electricity, and data center operations. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s SVP of Global Public Policy, highlighted that this partnership aligns with Maharashtra’s digital goals and expands access to emerging technologies.

The investment will also support over 81,300 full-time equivalent jobs in local businesses connected to the data center supply chain. AWS infrastructure serves major enterprises like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Lombard, startups like Healthify, and public-sector entities like Coal India Limited.

Through its AWS Partner Network (APN), AWS collaborates with firms like TCS, PwC, and Deloitte to drive innovation and help Indian businesses scale digital solutions. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 5.9 million individuals in cloud skills through initiatives such as the AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance, STEM education programs in Maharashtra, and specialised training programs for women and youth.

AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon, is a leading cloud computing platform offering a wide range of services, including computing power, storage, databases, and content delivery.

AWS is aggressively expanding its presence in the country. AWS has also committed an investment of INR 60,000 Cr (approximately $7 Bn) to establish data centers in Telangana.

In September last year, Amazon also reportedly announced plans to infuse an additional $2 Bn into Telangana to expand its data centre capabilities in the state.

Prior to this, Amazon announced plans to build a new hyper scale data centre in Hyderabad, which is said to be critical for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-enabled services.
