Astrotech platform Astroyogi has sued its peer Astrotalk, alleging unauthorised use of the ‘Astroyogi’ trademark.

Astroyogi has alleged that Astrotalk has used its trademark name within various horoscope categories, resulting in overlapping with the services offered by it.

The company claims that Astrotalk’s actions include illegal usage of Astroyogi’s trademark name and branding elements.

“We conduct our business with the highest standards of integrity and ethics, maintaining strong alignment with our partners. Our commitment to safeguarding our brand and the trust of our users is unwavering. The use of our brand name in Astrotalk’s offerings raises serious concerns and indicates a potential infringement of our trademark rights. We are dedicated to upholding rigorous legal and ethical standards and will address any unauthorized use of our intellectual property through the necessary legal channels,” Astroyogi said in a statement.

Founded by Meena Bahl Kapoor in 2001, Astroyogi emerged as a content creator for telecom partnerships with giants including Microsoft network, Yahoo, and AOL. Later the company forayed in the value-added service segment with focus on content creation, curation and live services for telecom companies. In 2016, Astroyogi launched its app to facilitate users with online astrology-based solutions.

Meanwhile, Astrotalk was founded by Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain in 2017 to offer  astrology services online .The startup recently raised INR 110 Cr ($14 Mn) in a mix of primary and secondary funding to expand its product portfolio and boost its services in regional languages. As per the company’s FY23 financial results, it posted a revenue of INR 282 Cr with a profit of INR 27 Cr.

The development comes at a time when India’s astrotech space has been seeing a lot of activities across funding and acquisitions.

For instance, Astrology SaaS platform Melooha recently bought Munitalks, a language translation and astrological guidance startup in an undisclosed amount deal to facilitate users with multilingual support and astrology consultation.

In May, Noida-based astrotech startup InstaAstro raised INR 18.5 Cr to  onboard new talents, build its brand presence and to expand its footprint across southern pockets and globally.

It is pertinent to note that leaders in the Indian astrotech space state that the young population is driving the growth of astrology-based startups in the country. As per Inc42’s report, spiritual tech startups are drawing more than 70% of their revenue share from younger users (25-35 years).

As per a study quoted by Inc42, the Indian faith market stood at  $58.56 Bn in 2023.
