AI major Anthropic is planning to hire a country lead for India as part of its global expansion plan.

According to a CNBC report, the company is also looking for country heads in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore, while expanding across Europe and the UK. The hiring push is aimed at capitalising on the rising enterprise demand for AI tools.

Like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic is known for its Claude AI chatbot, particularly its software development capabilities.

India accounts for 7.2% of global Claude usage, making it Anthropic’s second-largest market after the US, which holds 21.6% share.

To support its expansion, Anthropic plans to triple its international workforce and increase its applied AI team fivefold this year, with over 100 positions in Dublin, London, and Zurich, and its first Asian office in Tokyo.

This comes at a time when AI adoption is increasing rapidly in the country. As a result, India has emerged as a major market for AI companies, which are now trying to set up teams in India. Anthropic’s rival OpenAI is set to open its office in Delhi this year. The company recently appointed former Coursera MD Raghav Gupta to lead its education vertical for India and Asia Pacific, and former Meta marketing lead Sheeladitya Mohanty as marketing head for India.

OpenAI has also launched the OpenAI Learning Accelerator in partnership with the Ministry of Education and AICTE, and recently introduced ChatGPT Go at INR 399 per month. CEO Sam Altman has described India as a rapidly growing market that could eventually surpass the US in ChatGPT adoption.

Meanwhile, India is pushing indigenous LLMs through the IndiaAI Mission. The government plans to set up 600 data labs and deploy 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates to accelerate AI research and innovation.

Homegrown startups like Soket AI, SarvamAI, and Gnani.ai are developing indigenous AI models under the initiative. Earlier this month, the Centre announced eight new entities – Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, Avataar AI, Zeinteiq Aitech Innovations, Genloop Intelligence, NeuroDX (Intellihealth), Shodh AI, and IIT Bombay’s BharatGen consortium – which have been selected to build LLMs.
